1. Visit Finland has implemented a new, national sustainable tourism indicator system that brings together public and private sector; destinations and companies in tourism sector.
This framework currently includes 40 indicators in 4 dimensions:
o Destination management 8 indicators
o Economic value 10 indicators
o Social and cultural impact 7 indicators
o Environmental impact 15 indicators
Visit Finland commits to systematically collect data from various data sources, including travel companies and destinations enrolled in national sustainable development programme "Sustainable Travel Finland" as well as citizen and visitor surveys.
2-3. The indicator data is published in Sustainable Travel Finland dashboard https://www.visitfinland.fi/suomen-matkailudata/sustainable-travel-finland-tilastot. Statistics on the main page are updated daily, while the indicator data is updated annually.
Sustainable Tourism Indicator system (STIs) includes 3 data collection and reporting levels:
o Business, Destination & National level
o Dashboard report includes 4th level; greater touristic region
The results will be further analysed in an annual "state of sustainable travel in Finland" report https://www.visitfinland.fi/49d3c8/globalassets/visitfinland.fi/vf-julkaisut/2023/state-of-sustainable-tourism-2022.pdf
Visit Finland further commits to develop the STIs system to align national tourism strategy and governmental programme, as well as international standards, as well as tourism industry needs. The data will radically help to support the tourism industry in green transition and sustainable development, as the data, which allows comparison, helps the entire tourism industry to understand where each stakeholder performs well, and where are the development areas.
In addition, each indicator is educational one. So it is not just about submitting data, but increasing one's competence through the STI system while submitting data. Moreover, the STI system is supported by educational e-guide as well as hands-on workshops.
EU Recovery and Resilience Funding is utliised to cover the costs of developing the STI system.
