The European Commission, on October 8, 2024, introduced two proposals to digitise passports and identity cards, known as the ‘EU Digital Travel application,’ for those travelling to and from the Schengen area. This initiative aims to accelerate border controls and ensure smoother travel while maintaining high security standards to ensure every traveller is thoroughly checked. It aligns with the Commission’s ‘Digital Europe’ strategy and ‘Digital Compass,’ aiming to meet Europe’s Digital Decade targets by digitising public services and providing digital identification to all EU citizens by 2030.

The European Commission adopted two proposals on October 8, 2024, to digitalise passports and identity cards, known as the ‘EU Digital Travel application,’ for those travelling to and from the Schengen area. This effort aims to accelerate border control processes and ensure smoother travel experiences while upholding high security standards to verify each traveller. The initiative aligns with the Commission’s ‘Digital Europe’ strategy and ‘Digital Compass’ within the framework of Europe’s Digital Decade targets, aiming to digitise public services and provide all Union citizens with digital identification by 2030.
Digital travel credentials (digital versions of passport and ID card data) will enable smoother and faster border crossings, facilitate freedom of movement, reduce administrative burdens for EU citizens, enhance border control efficiency, and improve Schengen area security. The EU Digital Travel application will allow the creation of digital travel credentials, submission of travel plans and documents to border authorities in advance, and ensure data protection. If approved by the Council and the European Parliament, the EU Digital Travel application is expected to be available by 2030.
