The European Commission oversees the European Capitals of Culture programme, which names towns throughout the EU to hold a year-long celebration of art and culture. Started in 1985, the goal of this effort is to encourage the cultural growth of cities, a sense of shared cultural identity, and the richness and diversity of European cultures. Every year, a competitive process is used to identify the cities that will receive funds and resources from the EU. This project is significant because it raises cities' visibility internationally, encourages travel, and aids in the social and economic revitalisation of metropolitan areas.
