In September, 2024, the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection of Germany published the National Tourism Strategy which outlines Germany’s strategic approach to enhancing its tourism sector. It focuses on making tourism in Germany more sustainable, competitive, and resilient, especially in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The document aims for climate neutrality by 2045, promotes digitalization to enhance tourism services, and addresses labor shortages through better training and working conditions. It also seeks to improve the global competitiveness of Germany’s tourism industry by supporting innovation and infrastructure, while ensuring that tourism benefits are equitably distributed across all regions, including rural areas. Overall, it aims to position Germany as a leading sustainable tourism destination, balancing economic growth with environmental and social responsibility.
