The new EU Package Travel Directive introduces significant improvements in traveler protections for nearly 120 million consumers. By broadening the definition of ‘package’ to include both pre-arranged and customized travel combinations, the directive ensures travelers receive clearer information and enhanced protection against provider insolvency. It establishes stronger safeguards for linked travel arrangements, such as financial protection and repatriation if a provider goes bankrupt.

Improvements in the updated rules include making both tour operators and individual service providers accountable for the entire travel experience, thus enhancing traveler recourse. Additionally, the directive offers better cancellation rights and pricing transparency, allowing travelers to cancel bookings for any reason with a reasonable fee and protecting against significant price increases. These updates aim to provide greater security, clarity, and fairness, thereby reinforcing consumer confidence in the travel industry.
