The Report on the First Mediterranean Regional Cruise Dialogue (MRCD), held on October 14, 2015, in Olbia, Italy, provides outcomes of the event which brought together stakeholders from ports, cruise lines, and destinations to discuss sustainable growth and job creation in the Mediterranean cruise sector. This event aimed to implement Action 3 of the European Commission’s Coastal and Maritime Tourism Strategy. Key outcomes included the agreement to compile a “Common Challenges Paper” to address regional challenges and set objectives for sustainable growth. Stakeholders emphasized the need for better involvement of destination representatives, strategic investment planning, and adapting Port Reception Facilities (PRF) to meet peak demands. They also discussed improving public perception of cruise tourism, enhancing communication on its broader benefits, and developing diverse hinterland products.

The dialogue highlighted issues such as visa regulations, funding administration, and legislative coherence as barriers, and stressed the importance of reducing unnecessary service obligations for cruise ships. Overall, the report focuses on developing a comprehensive action plan to address these challenges and promote sustainable growth in the Mediterranean cruise sector.
