The Cycling Waterways project, co-financed by the European Union through the Interreg Europe programme, aims to promote sustainable mobility by developing cycling routes along rivers, canals, lakes, and wetlands. Led by Zaragoza City Council and involving eight partner organisations, the initiative focuses on improving existing embankment infrastructure and creating new paths that meet EU standards for safety and accessibility.

Running from April 2024 to June 2028, the EUR 1.59 million project seeks to reduce car dependency and encourage sustainable tourism. It supports both short- and long-distance cycling while respecting biodiversity and preserving historic water features.

Participating regions will collaborate to address challenges such as private property crossings, water management, and funding requirements. By the end of the project, a well-connected network of cycling routes along waterways is expected to emerge, enhancing regional connectivity and fostering sustainable travel across diverse landscapes.
