The difficulty of sustainably repurposing religious heritage is addressed by REliHE, which focuses on Religious Heritage in Rural Areas and runs from April 1, 2024, until June 30, 2028. Despite their historical and artistic significance, rural religious buildings often face disuse or decay due to secularization and demographic shifts. These challenges are compounded by rural areas' broader socioeconomic issues. REliHE seeks to enhance partners' understanding and capacity to improve regional policy instruments by promoting strategic reuse and reimagining religious heritage, fostering improved governance and structural change. By considering both material preservation and intangible values tied to collective memory, the project aims to unlock the potential of religious heritage as a driver of rural development.
