The European Network of Cities and Regions for the Social Economy (REVES) held an event in Strasbourg on 14 May to call for stronger support from European, national, and local authorities for the social economy. Through a collective appeal, REVES urged the implementation of concrete measures—such as clearer strategies, enhanced dialogue between governance levels, and formal mandates—to strengthen social cohesion, democratic participation, and sustainable development. The network emphasised the social economy’s role in fostering inclusion, innovation, and resilience across Europe.

REVES Mobilises Cities and Regions to Strengthen Social Economy, Social Cohesion and Democracy

On 14 May, the European Network of Cities and Regions for the Social Economy (REVES) organised a high-level event hosted by the city of Strasbourg. The gathering brought together representatives from REVES member cities and regions, as well as other territories committed to the values of the social economy. Also present were key European actors engaged in advancing the sector. The event served as a platform to launch a call to action, urging European institutions, national governments, and local and regional authorities to reinforce their support for the social economy, social cohesion, and democracy.

Through this initiative, REVES is encouraging regions to raise their voices and push for stronger recognition of the social economy’s role in building a sustainable and inclusive European future.

On its website, REVES highlights that the social economy not only fosters responsible citizenship and entrepreneurship but also represents a resilient economic model. It offers innovative responses to pressing social, environmental, and democratic challenges, promotes the general interest, and strengthens the link between EU values and citizens' everyday lives.

A Clear Appeal for Concrete Measures

In its open letter, REVES calls on public authorities across Europe to take concrete steps to advance the social economy. This includes defining a clearer vision for the social economy and social enterprises, updating or developing national strategies and action plans, and establishing mechanisms that enhance dialogue and cooperation across all levels of government.

REVES also advocates for dedicated mandates for the social economy within public administrations, the full inclusion of the social and solidarity economy (SSE) in social dialogue at both national and EU levels, and active contributions to policies that promote sustainable development. Importantly, it warns against superficial practices like "greenwashing" and "social laundering," urging genuine action and accountability.
