The Balkan Mosaic – Youth Culture Routes project brings together 15 young people from Serbia, North Macedonia, and Albania to promote regional unity through the preservation of cultural heritage. By engaging in peer-to-peer presentations, city tours, and collaborative mapping, participants explore shared traditions and build cross-cultural understanding. The project connects closely with the concept of proximity, fostering not only geographic closeness but also social cohesion and mutual respect. Led by Young Ambassadors, the initiative empowers youth to become local change-makers aligned with European values and sustainable development goals. Through this work, Balkan Mosaic shows how cultural heritage and youth activism can strengthen community ties and contribute to long-term peace and cooperation in the Western Balkans.

In a region shaped by diversity, complexity, and shared history, Balkan Mosaic – Youth Culture Routes offers a powerful example of how proximity—not just in geography, but in understanding, identity, and cooperation—can become a force for unity and sustainable development. This cross-border initiative, supported by the Regional Youth Cooperation Office (RYCO), brings together 15 young participants from Serbia, North Macedonia, and Albania, equipping them to become advocates for the preservation and promotion of cultural heritage in the Western Balkans.
More than a youth exchange, Balkan Mosaic builds a network of proximity across borders, fostering cross-cultural dialogue, dismantling stereotypes, and highlighting the everyday heritage that connects communities often divided by history. Through peer-to-peer heritage presentations, guided city tours, and collaborative learning, the project encourages young people to explore and map their shared spaces—historic neighborhoods, creative hubs, and cultural landmarks—all within their local and regional reach.
In this context, proximity is not only physical but symbolic. It reflects a deeper connection to place and people, where walking through one's city or neighboring country becomes a way of reclaiming stories, traditions, and a shared vision for the future. By mapping cultural routes and highlighting innovative local initiatives, youth participants not only enrich the regional tourism offer but also contribute to a more inclusive and accessible cultural narrative, grounded in mutual respect and cooperation.
This project also reflects the mission of Young Ambassadors, the youth organization behind Balkan Mosaic. Through its three strategic pillars—youth participation, social economy, and innovations with impact—Young Ambassadors empowers young people to take ownership of local change while connecting with global goals, such as the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Whether through cultural mapping, digital innovation, or civic advocacy, the organization cultivates local leadership with a strong European perspective.
Balkan Mosaic reinforces the idea that proximity is not only a feature of urban design—it is a mindset. It invites us to think about closeness in terms of cultural understanding, social cohesion, and regional solidarity. In doing so, it provides a framework for peacebuilding and cooperation in a region where unity often begins with shared experiences and face-to-face encounters.
As the youth explore their heritage routes across the Balkans, they are also paving the way for a more connected, empathetic, and collaborative region, where proximity becomes a building block for long-term reconciliation and European integration.
