Founded in 2019 by Amaia and Julen, Gravity Wave is a fast-growing social enterprise tackling plastic pollution in the Mediterranean Sea. The organisation's vision is ambitious yet clear: remove plastic from our oceans and give it a second life by turning it into sustainable products. Their circular model ensures that marine waste is transformed into something valuable and measurable.
Through close cooperation with traditional fishermen and local harbours, Gravity Wave has already removed more than 897,000 kg of plastic from the sea and ports. The waste is sorted, weighed, and logged using a transparent app-based system, allowing real-time traceability from collection to recycling. Approximately one-third of the recovered materials come from the open sea, while the rest is collected from port areas.
Once collected, the waste enters a transformation process where nets and plastics are repurposed into high-quality materials and impactful products. Over 317,000 kg of plastic have already been reused, reducing waste and contributing to a cleaner Mediterranean. All data is made available to project partners through detailed reports, reinforcing trust and ensuring compliance with the latest EU sustainability directives.
The enterprise operates within a robust ethical framework that ensures full traceability and accountability, avoiding greenwashing and ensuring that each kilogram collected makes a documented difference. Their impact is further reinforced by blockchain verification and aligned with EU Directive 2024/825.
Beyond environmental impact, Gravity Wave aims to foster a sustainability culture, mobilising communities, businesses, and governments under one goal: plastic-free seas. Through innovation, transparency, and social engagement, the initiative exemplifies a circular, community-powered approach to marine conservation.
