La Maison des Canaux is no ordinary building—it’s a living, breathing embodiment of the circular economy. Once an administrative centre for Paris' canal network, this canal-side venue in the 19th arrondissement was reborn through a bold experiment: a complete renovation using only reused, recycled, or bio-based materials and carried out by social enterprises.
Key renovation stats include:
- 88% of materials reused or recycled
- 95% of site waste diverted from landfill
- 65% of project value awarded to social inclusion companies
More than just a sustainable refurbishment, the Maison is now the vibrant headquarters of the Canaux Association—a platform dedicated to boosting circular, social and solidarity-based economies across disadvantaged areas.
Its facilities include:
- Event space (130 m²): For conferences, artisan markets, exhibitions and more—beneath a ceiling installation by origami artist Junior Fritz-Jacquet
- Terrace overlooking the canal: A green and accessible outdoor area
- Meeting rooms (10–20 people capacity): Available when not in use by staff or programmes
- Public tours and professional visits, including by circular construction professionals
The association’s mission is clear: to support small businesses and social enterprises tackling ecological and social challenges head-on. Through its 12 programme areas, Les Canaux delivers:
- Awareness-raising
- Sector development
- Guidance for entrepreneurs
- Economic impact strategies
- Since its founding, the association has:
- Supported 6,000+ businesses
- Accompanied 7,000+ professionals
- Engaged 300,000+ participants through events
Backed by a wide network of public and private partners, La Maison des Canaux has become a beacon of eco-social transformation, offering both inspiration and practical tools for others to follow.
