Two European tourism SMEs supported by the Circular Economy for Regenerative Tourism (CE4RT) project have recently achieved significant national recognition. The CE4RT project, co-financed under the Single Market Programme and implemented by the European Innovation Council and SMEs Executive Agency (EISMEA), aims to assist tourism SMEs in adopting sustainable and regenerative practices that strengthen local economies and enhance community engagement.

Icelandic company GJ Travel received the Icelandic Incentive Award for responsible tourism on 15 January 2025, presented by President Halla Tomasdottir. Utilising EU funding for coaching, GJ Travel developed a sustainability policy and introduced ‘Regenerative Tourism Tours,’ focusing on minimising carbon footprints and supporting local communities. The initiative ensures that tourism revenue supports small businesses, traditional crafts, and cultural preservation efforts.

In Ireland, Wildlands was shortlisted for the Irish Green Awards 2025, which honours organisations contributing to a greener future. The company used EU funding to devise strategies aimed at reducing environmental impact and encouraging guest engagement with the natural surroundings. By promoting outdoor activities that respect and restore natural habitats, Wildlands contributes to a tourism model that integrates sustainability with local economic resilience.

Through the CE4RT project, these SMEs exemplify how tourism businesses can align with the proximity economy strengthening regional networks, prioritising local supply chains, and fostering inclusive growth.
