Climate protection is one of the greatest ecological challenges of our time and is therefore a key focus of the long-standing cooperation between EDEKA and the nature conservation organization WWF. Together, the sustainability partners develop science-based climate protection targets to effectively reduce the company’s greenhouse gas emissions.
EDEKA’s headquarters, together with its subsidiaries Netto Marken-Discount and Budni Handels- und Servicegesellschaft (BHSG), aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 90 percent by 2045 based on the baseline year 2022. This includes not only emissions that can be directly influenced (Scope 1 and 2), such as electricity consumption from refrigeration units, but also emissions from upstream and downstream parts of the supply chain (Scope 3). These include, for example, emissions from agricultural food production.
These and other ambitious climate goals have now been officially validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).
This positions EDEKA as a pioneer in the German food retail sector. As early as 2022, EDEKA headquarters, together with Netto Marken-Discount and BHSG, became the first German retailer to commit to the net-zero targets of the initiative to combat the climate crisis. Together with WWF, measures are now being developed to ensure the achievement of these ambitious goals.
