The European chemical industry continues to play an important role in the EU’s industrial framework, contributing significantly to economic growth, innovation, and sustainability. Despite global market challenges, the sector remains the fourth-largest manufacturing industry in the EU, providing 1.2 million direct jobs and supporting 13% of the world’s chemical production.
In 2023, chemicals accounted for 9.3% of EU27 manufacturing exports and maintained a positive trade surplus. Consumer chemicals were the largest contributor to this surplus, while the US emerged as the top export destination and China as the leading import partner.
In 2023, the European chemical industry maintained steady levels of capital spending, reflecting a continued focus on innovation and sustainability. The sector upheld its position as the third-largest R&I investor globally, contributing to advancements in sustainable production processes, digital technologies, and circular economy models.
The chemical industry contributes to activities related to Europe’s green and digital transitions, with involvement in areas such as sustainable development and industrial production in the global market.
