The Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking (CBE JU) is a public-private partnership between the European Union and the Bio-based Industries Consortium (BIC), established under Horizon Europe to support competitive and sustainable circular bio-based industries across Europe. The initiative focuses on accelerating the transition from fossil-based systems towards renewable and circular bio-based production processes, contributing to the EU’s climate and industrial objectives.

CBE JU brings together stakeholders from across bio-based value chains, including industry, research organisations, SMEs, policymakers and regional actors. Through funding opportunities, collaborative projects and innovation support, the partnership promotes the development and scale-up of sustainable bio-based solutions in areas such as bio-based materials, chemicals, manufacturing processes and circular production systems. It also supports the deployment of demonstration plants and flagship biorefineries to strengthen industrial innovation and market uptake across Europe.

By fostering cross-sector collaboration and investment in research and innovation, CBE JU contributes to strengthening Europe’s bioeconomy ecosystem and industrial resilience. The initiative also plays a role in supporting broader EU priorities related to circular economy, climate neutrality and sustainable competitiveness, while encouraging long-term cooperation among stakeholders across regional and industrial value chains.

Readers can find more information about CBE JU on the official website.
