The European Commission has launched the Side by Side testimonial series, showcasing examples of cooperation between EU and non-EU citizens in workplaces across Europe. The initiative highlights the contribution of workers from outside the EU to local economies and communities, while illustrating how integration can support labour market needs and social inclusion. Through personal stories from different Member States, the series provides practical examples of how diverse workforces are helping address skills and labour shortages in key sectors.
One of the first testimonials focuses on Lithuania, where labour shortages continue to affect several sectors of the economy. The video follows Hanan, originally from Syria, and Nijolė from Lithuania, who work together in Vilnius producing handmade clothing. Their experience demonstrates how workers from outside the EU can contribute valuable skills while supporting local businesses facing workforce challenges. The story also highlights the role of the EU’s Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund (AMIF), which supports initiatives aimed at attracting talent, facilitating labour market integration, and helping people find employment that matches their qualifications and experience. Through this example, the series illustrates how collaboration between EU and non-EU workers can benefit businesses while strengthening social and economic participation.
The Side by Side series highlights the growing importance of inclusive labour markets in supporting economic resilience and addressing workforce needs across Europe. By sharing real-life experiences from workplaces across Member States, the initiative provides insight into the practical impact of integration policies and workforce diversity.
