Textile Exchange has introduced the Materials Matter Standard, a voluntary sustainability standard for the production and primary processing of raw materials used in the fashion, textile, and apparel industry.
The standard provides a science-based, harmonised approach to assessing environmental and social impacts of raw materials, supporting companies in setting targets, tracking progress, and improving transparency. It builds on existing Textile Exchange tools and aligns company choices with broader climate, nature, people and animals protection goals. By offering a common language and methodology, the Materials Matter Standard aims to support more informed decision-making and accelerate the transition toward lower-impact, more sustainable materials in the global textiles ecosystem.
The Materials Matter Standard becomes effective on December 31, 2026, and will be mandatory from December 31, 2027.
