The TECHEU VD AMSILK ADVANCED MATERIALS project (2026–2028) supports AMSilk’s scale-up of spider silk protein-based materials, combining industrial deployment in the Czech Republic and R&D in Germany. Backed by financing from the European Investment Bank under InvestEU, the project aims to enable industrial production of sustainable biomaterials for applications in textiles and other sectors.

Project scope and context
The TECHEU VD AMSILK ADVANCED MATERIALS (IEU GT2) project supports AMSilk’s investment programme for the period 2026–2028, focusing on the development and scale-up of innovative spider silk protein-based materials. The initiative is supported by the European Investment Bank (EIB) with financing of approximately EUR 30 million, under the InvestEU programme, contributing to a total project cost of around EUR 94 million. The project combines industrial deployment and research, development and innovation (RDI) activities to enable the production and downstream processing of biofabricated silk proteins with a reduced environmental footprint.
The industrial component foresees the establishment of an advanced production line at a contract manufacturing organisation facility in Lovosice, Czech Republic, while RDI activities are carried out at the company’s pilot plant in Neuried, Germany. Through this integrated approach, the project aims to accelerate the industrialisation of sustainable biomaterials for applications across textiles, consumer goods, and other ecosystems.
Objectives and key ambitions
The project aims to scale up the production of spider silk protein-based fibres by developing a fully integrated production line, including spinning, yarning, and recycling processes. It seeks to advance research and innovation activities to optimise material performance and production efficiency.
A key objective is to enable the transition from pilot to industrial-scale manufacturing, allowing the production of high-quality biomaterials at greater volumes. The project also intends to support the development of sustainable alternatives to conventional and fossil-based materials, contributing to reduced environmental impact across their lifecycle.
Expected impact
The project is expected to contribute to the wider adoption of biodegradable materials with a reduced environmental impact in the textile and consumer goods ecosystems. By enabling industrial-scale production, it supports the market uptake of innovative biomaterials that can replace conventional synthetic fibres and ingredients.
It is also anticipated to strengthen the bioeconomy by demonstrating the commercial viability of biotechnology-based material production, while reducing reliance on fossil-based resources. The development of low-impact production processes and recyclable materials is expected to contribute to environmental sustainability objectives.
In addition, supporting the emergence of enhanced industrial capabilities in advanced biomaterials might open new opportunities for sustainable product innovation across multiple sectors.
