The EFFECTIVE project was funded under the Horizon 2020 Framework Programme. It ran from June 2018 to February 2023, with the objective of demonstrating economically viable bio‑based polyamides and polyesters for large consumer products. The project covered the full value chain, from renewable feedstocks to end‑of‑life solutions, validating circular, eco‑designed fibres and films for applications including textiles, packaging, construction and automotive products.

Introduction to the project

The EFFECTIVE project, formally titled ‘Advanced Eco‑designed Fibres and Films for large consumer products from biobased polyamides and polyesters in a circular EConomy perspecTIVE’, was funded by the European Union under the Horizon 2020 Framework Programme. It ran from June 2018 to February 2023, with a total budget of EUR 11.79 million and an EU contribution of EUR 7.17 million. Coordinated by AQUAFILSLO PROIZVODNJA POLIAMIDNIH FILAMENTOV IN GRANULATOV DOO (Slovenia), the consortium brought together industrial companies, research organisations and sustainability experts from several European countries. EFFECTIVE aimed to demonstrate economically viable routes for producing bio‑based polyamides and polyesters from renewable feedstocks and to validate their use in eco‑designed large consumer products. The project followed a circular economy approach, covering the full value chain from feedstock production to end‑of‑life solutions, with applications including textiles, construction, automotive and packaging

Project’s achievements

A core element of EFFECTIVE was the development and demonstration of bio‑based polymers and circular solutions across multiple industrial sectors.

Key achievements of the project include:

  • Development of an integrated bio-based value chain, from renewable feedstocks (sugars and oils) to polymers, fibres, films and end-of-life solutions.
  • Validation of innovative processes for producing bio‑based building blocks from sugars and alternative oil sources at pilot and pre‑industrial scale.
  • Development and validation of bio‑based polyamides and biodegradable polyesters for applications such as textiles and packaging, including recycling, composting and circular end-to-life solutions.
  • Production of the first‑ever 100% bio‑based Nylon 6 polymer at pre-industrial scale, successfully converted into fibres, fabrics, and consumer product prototypes (e.g. carpets and garments).

Supporting outcomes also included comprehensive environmental, economic and social sustainability assessments, analysis of standards and certification schemes, and actions contributing to market uptake and future industrial scaling.

Contribution of the project to EU objectives: strengthening circular innovation and industrial competitiveness

EFFECTIVE contributed to EU objectives on sustainability, circular economy and industrial competitiveness by demonstrating scalable and economically viable bio‑based alternatives to fossil‑based polymers. By integrating bio‑based economy principles with circular product design, the project supported reduced reliance on fossil resources, lower environmental footprints and improved end‑of‑life management for textile and consumer products. The validation of bio‑based fibres, films and polymers at relevant operational scale provided evidence of industrial feasibility, supporting future investment and market uptake within the European textiles and materials industries. The project’s work aligns with EU ambitions under the bioeconomy and circular economy strategies, relevant to the transition towards more resilient and sustainable value chains.

European collaboration and knowledge transfer

EFFECTIVE was implemented through close collaboration between industrial partners, research organisations and sustainability experts from across Europe. This multidisciplinary approach enabled knowledge exchange across the entire value chain, from feedstock production and polymer development to textile processing and recycling. Knowledge generated within the project was shared through scientific publications, conferences, training sessions, newsletters and digital communication channels, alongside dedicated outreach activities that engaged a broad network of stakeholders across Europe. These actions facilitated the transfer of results to industry stakeholders, policymakers and the wider European textiles ecosystem, and contributed to raising awareness and facilitating uptake of bio‑based and circular solutions.
