Amidst Europe's search for innovative ways to promote tourism while addressing climate concerns, the Alpine Pearls network stands out as a leading example of sustainable tourism development. Since its inception in 2006 and its formal establishment as a European Grouping of Territorial Cooperation (EGTC) in 2022, Alpine Pearls has brought together Alpine municipalities dedicated to eco-friendly tourism and sustainable mobility. The network now spans destinations in Austria, Italy, Slovenia, Germany, and Switzerland, all sharing a unified goal: to promote tourism that minimises car dependence and encourages visitors to explore the Alps more sustainably and mindfully.

Alpine Pearls centres on eco-mobility, encouraging visitors to use trains, buses, public transport, e-bikes, shuttles, walking, and other eco-friendly options. Many destinations provide mobility cards, traffic-calmed villages, and integrated transport, making car-free stays practical and appealing. The network illustrates how sustainable mobility can be an advantage for tourism rather than a constraint. Instead of prioritising mass tourism, Alpine Pearls advocates for slower, experience-focused travel that emphasises nature, local culture, and wellbeing. Activities like hiking, cycling, gastronomy, wellness, and cultural traditions are included in destination offerings, enabling visitors to connect more deeply with Alpine communities and landscapes. Visitors are encouraged to arrive by train or bus and continue their journey by public transport, e-bikes, shuttles, walking paths, or other low-impact mobility solutions. Many member destinations offer mobility cards, traffic-calmed village centres, and integrated transport services to make car-free holidays both practical and attractive.

The network also demonstrates how sustainable mobility can become a tourism asset rather than a limitation. Instead of focusing on mass tourism and high visitor volumes, Alpine Pearls promotes slower, experience-based travel connected to nature, local culture and wellbeing. Hiking, cycling, gastronomy, wellness and cultural traditions are integrated into destination offers, helping visitors engage more deeply with Alpine communities and landscapes.

For European tourism, the relevance of Alpine Pearls goes far beyond the Alps themselves. The initiative directly responds to major EU priorities in climate action, sustainable mobility, and destination resilience. Tourism transport remains one of the largest sources of emissions in the sector, making the promotion of low-carbon mobility increasingly important for destinations across Europe. Alpine Pearls shows that combining tourism with rail, cycling and public transport infrastructure can create attractive visitor experiences while reducing environmental pressure.

Governance and cross-border collaboration are crucial aspects. As an EGTC, Alpine Pearls allows municipalities from different countries to work together more effectively on tourism planning, mobility, and sustainability projects. This approach promotes integrated regional growth and shows how destinations can team up across borders to build stronger, more unified tourism ecosystems. The initiative is also gaining global recognition. Recently, Alpine Pearls was recognised as an innovative global tourism project for its role in promoting climate-friendly travel and regional cooperation. As Europe shifts toward greener, more resilient tourism models, initiatives like Alpine Pearls highlight that sustainable mobility has become a vital element of future tourism development. By integrating transport into the visitor experience and prioritising quality over quantity, Alpine destinations offer an inspiring model for future travel.
