The European Green Pioneer of Smart Tourism is an EU competition led by the European Commission, aimed at recognizing and rewarding smaller European destinations that have successfully implemented sustainable tourism strategies through green transition practices. Jurmala, Latvia, is among the seven countries recognized for the 2025 competition. Known for its dedication to protecting the local environment and providing long-term solutions for both residents and visitors, Jurmala has implemented several innovative initiatives. These include a fee for entering the city by car (excluding electric vehicles) to reduce traffic and encourage eco-friendly transportation, as well as free public transport for residents. The city has also enhanced its energy management systems and installed solar and wind-powered lighting in public areas.
