Saalfelden-Leogang, Austria, has been recognised as a best practice by the Sustainable EU Tourism project for its successful shift from a seasonal to a year-round destination through sustainable tourism development and strong local stakeholder collaboration.
Beginning in 2002 with the creation of one of the world’s most prominent mountain bike parks, the region strategically developed summer and off-season attractions to reduce dependency on winter tourism. This included expanding mountain infrastructure for families and nature lovers, introducing an integrated mobility system with discounts via a guest card, and launching the 365 Days Active and Creative programme to offer eco-focused, culturally rich experiences year-round.
A strong emphasis on local agriculture and regional products enhances sustainability and supports the local economy, with over 60% of farms organically certified. Since 2021, the destination has also pursued certification under the Austrian Ecolabel, aligning with its grassroots commitment to sustainability, shared by local stakeholders.
Targeted marketing campaigns and ongoing dialogue with tourism businesses reinforce the destination’s brand, focused on culture, regional identity, and resilience.
Saalfelden-Leogang’s transformation demonstrates how rural regions can shape their growth path sustainably while offering rich, year-round tourism experiences rooted in local values.
