Tahko, Finland, has positioned itself as a pioneer of sustainable tourism by becoming the first Finnish destination to achieve the national Sustainable Travel Finland label. Building on the EcoCompass certification, the resort adopted a systematic approach to environmental, economic, and socio-cultural sustainability, engaging local businesses, improving transparency through data, and strengthening its reputation in the domestic market.

Tahko, Finland, has been recognised as a best practice by the Sustainable EU Tourism project for its comprehensive commitment to sustainable tourism.

As a resort entirely dependent on nature, Tahko launched a two-year process to certify its Destination Management Organisation and nearly 30 local businesses under the EcoCompass certification, supported by training and awareness-raising on sustainability. Building on this foundation, Tahko accelerated its accreditation within the Sustainable Travel Finland programme and, in 2023, became the first destination in the country to earn this label.

The certification strengthened Tahko’s visibility in the Finnish market, boosted local employment, and created a stronger sense of responsibility among stakeholders toward environmental and social issues.

The destination now serves as a model for others, demonstrating how collective effort, a clear vision, and robust data can anchor long-term sustainability in tourism.

For more details on the key challenges the destination has faced, and the solutions implemented to address them, please refer to the attached document.
