The Eurostat tourism expenditure statistics indicate that in 2022, residents of the EU spent approximately EUR 474 billion on travel, with 53% of that amount going towards international trips and 47% on domestic travel. Notably, while domestic trips accounted for 75% of the total number of trips, they represented a smaller share of overall spending compared to international travel. The average expenditure per trip was EUR 441, with travelers spending EUR 275 on domestic trips and EUR 952 on foreign trips. Additionally, accommodation costs made up 35% of the total tourism budget, highlighting the significant financial impact of travel on both local and international economies.
