The shift to low-carbon tourism is no longer a distant goal; it is now a key focus for many destinations across Europe. The upcoming Less Carbon – Double the Fun forum, scheduled for 22 September 2026 in Tampere, Finland, directly addresses this transition by providing a platform for collaboration, innovation, and practical exchanges. Gathering tourism companies, destination management organizations, national tourism agencies, and developers from the Baltic Sea Region, the forum aims to be more than just a typical conference. It serves as a co-creation space where ideas are actively shared, developed, and tested through dialogue and interaction. The core message is straightforward but impactful: reducing carbon emissions does not mean sacrificing quality or appeal. Instead, the forum investigates how to design low-carbon tourism experiences that boost visitor satisfaction and deliver tangible benefits for businesses. This approach is especially important as destinations seek solutions that are both environmentally sustainable and economically sound.

The programme reflects this ambition. Participants can expect a combination of expert insights, interactive workshops and networking opportunities, all aimed at supporting concrete action. The co-creation workshop, in particular, offers a space to jointly explore innovative approaches—bridging perspectives from different countries, sectors, and levels of governance.

The choice of Tampere as the host city further reinforces the focus on forward-looking, sustainable tourism development. The event will take place at Tampere Hall, with the additional possibility to join remotely for the morning session, ensuring accessibility for a wider audience across the region.

Importantly, the forum is free of charge, lowering barriers to participation and encouraging a diverse mix of stakeholders. This inclusiveness is key to building meaningful collaboration, especially in a region as interconnected as the Baltic Sea, where tourism flows and challenges transcend national borders.

The event will be hosted by Aino Huilaja, a Finnish TV journalist, writer and speaker, adding a dynamic and engaging dimension to the programme. Her role will help guide discussions and connect different perspectives, ensuring that the forum remains both insightful and accessible.

From a broader European perspective, initiatives like this forum play a crucial role in translating policy ambitions into practice. While strategies at EU and macro-regional level increasingly emphasise climate action and sustainability, stakeholders often need concrete spaces to exchange ideas, test solutions and build partnerships. This forum provides exactly that.

By emphasizing both innovation and collaboration, it helps establish a shared vision of what low-carbon tourism can achieve in practice. It also enhances regional cooperation, which is vital for tackling issues like transport emissions, product development, and visitor behavior. Ultimately, Less Carbon – Double the Fun is not only focused on reducing environmental impact; it encourages reimagining tourism in a more creative, engaging, and sustainable way. The initiative invites stakeholders to go beyond simple trade-offs and instead see sustainability as a catalyst for improved tourism experiences.
