The proposal for a Council Regulation 2024/0248 (CNS), released on 10 October, 2024, aims to establish the issuance and technical standards for digital travel credentials based on identity cards. These digital credentials will use the data stored in the contactless chip of physical identity cards, allowing for secure and efficient border crossings within the EU. The initiative seeks to enhance the free movement of EU citizens by providing a digital alternative to physical travel documents, supported by a uniform standard across Member States.
