This directive, adopted on November 19, 2008, focuses on waste management within the European Union. It aims to promote sustainable waste practices, reduce environmental impact, and enhance resource efficiency. The key provisions include waste hierarchy, prioritizing prevention, reuse, recycling, recovery and disposal in that order, extended producer responsibility (EPR) meaning that producers are responsible for managing the waste generated by their products, waste prevention plans to minimize waste generation and promote circular economy principles, reporting and monitoring, and repeal of previous directives.
