The Schengen area summary was prepared by EUR-Lex - Access to European Union law. It includes 26 European nations that have done away with internal border restrictions. It facilitates smooth transit between member states by enabling travel without a passport. Except for a few EU nations (like Ireland), the majority of continental Europe is included in the Schengen zone. Since the Schengen Agreement was signed in 1985, more territory has been added. In order to improve mobility, trade, and tourism while preserving security, it harmonises visa laws, external border controls, and cross-border police cooperation.

Revised Package Travel Directive now in force
