The new edition of Best of the World by National Geographic celebrates destinations that define the evolving spirit of travel in 2026 — places where nature, culture and innovation meet. Europe features prominently in this year’s selection, with regions and cities that exemplify resilience, creativity and sustainability.

In Italy, the Dolomites and Milan take centre stage, reflecting the country’s dual strength in both outdoor adventure and urban design. The Dolomites are recognised for their spectacular alpine landscapes and local Ladin culture, while Milan is preparing for the spotlight as a host city for the 2026 Winter Olympics, showcasing a blend of architectural heritage and modern sustainability.

Further west, the Basque Country in Spain joins the list, representing a model of cultural regeneration. Known for its distinct identity, world-class cuisine and innovation in design, the region exemplifies how local pride and creativity can shape global tourism trends.

In Portugal, the historic city of Guimarães is acknowledged for its ability to connect heritage with modern cultural life. Once the cradle of Portuguese nationhood, it continues to evolve as a hub of creativity, urban renewal and authentic community experiences.

The United Kingdom also appears with Hull, a city that has transformed its industrial legacy into a platform for culture and the arts, proving that post-industrial destinations can reinvent themselves through storytelling and engagement.

Oulu, in northern Finland, is recognised as one of Europe’s most forward-looking destinations, highlighted for its role as the European Capital of Culture 2026 and its strong emphasis on creativity, innovation, and community engagement.

These European highlights together paint a picture of a continent where tourism goes beyond iconic landmarks — focusing instead on more profound, place-based experiences that celebrate history, innovation and sustainability.

National Geographic’s Best of the World 2026 reminds travellers and professionals alike that the future of tourism lies not in quantity, but in quality: in discovering meaningful stories, connecting with local people, and exploring responsibly.
