Carbonia, a town in Italy once known for its coal mining industry, has ingeniously revived its fortunes by embracing cultural tourism. After the mines closed in 1970, economic decline threatened the town, but a visionary project began in 1999 to regenerate its urban landscape.

By repurposing the Serbariu mine into a museum and integrating VR, AR, and other digital innovations, Carbonia turned its historical sites into vibrant tourist attractions. Furthermore, by preserving the Sardinian language and joining various cultural networks, Carbonia has enhanced its visibility and appeal. The town has successfully curbed depopulation, increased employment by 12%, and enjoyed a 72% surge in tourism between 2022 and 2023, setting a benchmark for sustainable development that other towns can aspire to.
