The European Cyclists’ Federation (ECF) and the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to foster collaboration on sustainable tourism and cycling mobility. This agreement unites two influential organisations operating at the crossroads of tourism development, sustainability standards, and active transportation.
ECF manages the EuroVelo network, a system of long-distance cycling routes connecting destinations across Europe, while GSTC is renowned for its international sustainable travel standards, as defined by the GSTC Criteria. Their partnership aims to better incorporate sustainability principles into the development of cycling tourism.
The partnership promotes cycling tourism as a responsible, eco-friendly travel option that supports mobility, outdoor recreation, and local economies. Aligning cycling initiatives with GSTC standards allows destinations and tourism businesses to assess and enhance their sustainability efforts.
The MOU also encourages knowledge exchange through joint events, such as webinars and information sessions focused on sustainable cycling tourism. These activities will showcase best practices, innovative tourism models, and approaches for integrating cycling infrastructure with destination management.
For Europe’s tourism sector, this collaboration is significant. Cycling tourism is rapidly growing and supports low-impact travel, regional growth, and rural tourism. EuroVelo routes connect cities, nature, and cultural sites across borders, promoting a slower, more sustainable way to explore Europe.
Linking cycling tourism with globally recognised sustainability standards enhances the credibility of eco-friendly tourism efforts. Destinations can adopt clearer frameworks for environmental management, community support, and enhanced visitor experience.
This partnership reflects a broader European trend towards climate-conscious mobility, regenerative tourism, and integrated destination strategies. As Europe advances greener travel, cooperation between mobility and tourism organisations will be vital for establishing a more sustainable and resilient tourism ecosystem.
