In a significant move this week, the European Commission formalized grant agreements under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) to advance transport infrastructure in several Eastern European countries, including Poland, Slovakia, Romania, Ukraine, and Moldova. Announced in July 2025, these projects are crucial for enhancing rail and port capacity and ensuring high-speed, interoperable cross-border connections across the trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T).
This initiative spans important regions, notably revamping Poland's Rail Baltica and introducing Moldova's first electrified railway section. Funded through the CEF mechanism, the EU is set to double its previous budget, injecting over EUR 51 billion for mobility improvements. These efforts are vital for securing economic stability and diversification in transport routes, enhancing regional connectivity, particularly in response to geopolitical challenges posed by Russia's actions against Ukraine.
