In a landmark move at the Global Tourism Forum in Brussels, European Commissioner for Transport and Tourism, Apostolos Tzitzikostas, announced the EU's first tourism strategy with sustainability at its core. This strategic plan comes as Europe remains a top tourism destination, attracting 758 million visitors in 2024 and generating significant economic benefits. However, the rising number of tourists is straining resources and infrastructure, especially in nations like Spain, France, Germany, and Italy.
The strategy emphasizes reducing emissions, wise management of resources, and protecting cultural and natural assets, aiming for regional development and greater resilience against climate change. Despite not having direct legislative power over tourism, the EU plans to exert its influence across related sectors, paving the way for a sustainable future for Europe's tourism industry.
Moreover, José Ramón Bauzá, founder of the Aviation and Tourism Forum, highlighted the indirect effects of EU policies like the ReFuelEU Aviation Regulation and the forthcoming Entry/Exit System on tourism, illustrating how broader legislative decisions shape travel dynamics and costs.
For a detailed look into these developments and how Europe plans to redefine tourism read the full article here. You can also visit the Commissioner's website to see Commissioner's Tzitzikostas's speech.
