As climate change increasingly affects how destinations are experienced, managing extreme heat is becoming a critical challenge for tourism—particularly in urban areas. In response, UN Tourism has launched an innovation challenge focused on green technologies for urban heat mitigation in Malta, aiming to improve comfort, usability and overall experience in cities.

The initiative calls on innovators, startups and companies to develop solutions that reduce urban temperatures, enhance shading and create more liveable public spaces. The goal is not only environmental, but also experiential: making cities more enjoyable for both residents and visitors, especially during periods of high temperatures. At the heart of the challenge is a clear recognition that tourism and climate adaptation are closely linked. Rising temperatures and more frequent heatwaves are already influencing travel patterns, visitor satisfaction and the usability of public spaces. By focusing on urban heat mitigation, the initiative directly addresses one of the most tangible impacts of climate change on tourism.

The proposed solutions are expected to combine environmental innovation with practical application. This includes approaches such as increasing urban greenery, integrating shading solutions, and using materials or technologies that reduce heat accumulation. These interventions can significantly improve microclimates in cities, making outdoor areas more accessible and attractive year-round.

Importantly, the challenge is designed as more than a call for ideas—it is a support mechanism for innovation in tourism. Connecting startups with public authorities and destination stakeholders creates opportunities to test, scale, and implement solutions in real urban environments. This collaborative approach ensures that innovations are not only developed, but also integrated into destination management practices.

Malta provides a particularly relevant context for this initiative. As a Mediterranean destination with high tourism intensity and increasing exposure to heat, it reflects broader challenges faced by many European regions. Solutions developed and tested in Malta therefore have strong potential for transferability to other destinations across Southern and Central Europe.

From a European perspective, the initiative aligns closely with key priorities such as climate adaptation, sustainable tourism and smart cities. It demonstrates how tourism policy can intersect with urban planning, environmental innovation and technological development—creating integrated solutions that benefit both local communities and visitors.

At the same time, it highlights a broader shift in tourism thinking. The focus is moving beyond reducing environmental impact towards actively improving the conditions in which tourism takes place. In this context, enhancing thermal comfort, public space quality and urban liveability becomes part of the tourism offer itself.

Ultimately, the challenge shows how innovation can help destinations adapt to a changing climate while maintaining their attractiveness and competitiveness. By addressing a very practical issue—urban heat—it contributes to shaping a more resilient, inclusive and future-proof tourism model.
