The hackathon is open to students and professionals from game design, app development, tourism and destination management, marketing and communication, and sustainability and cultural heritage. If applications exceed the available places, participants are selected for the complementarity of their skills and their motivation, so that teams are balanced in both expertise and nationality. Before the event, each team receives a briefing on its destination’s challenge, and the winning team is invited to Madeira in March 2027, with travel, accommodation and meals covered, to present its idea to an international audience.

For destinations, the format is a low-cost way to test how games and digital storytelling can help interpret heritage, engage visitors and encourage them to explore beyond the most crowded sites. I-DEMO is an Erasmus+ project that works on improving destination management through game-based strategies, with partners in six European countries.
