On 2 July, during a plenary debate with Commissioner Apostolos Tzitzikostas, regional and local authorities urged the European Commission to involve them more closely in shaping sustainable tourism policies. They emphasised the urgency of addressing the growing imbalance across tourist destinations and called for access to funding and data to support evidence-based decision-making.
With a public consultation currently underway, regions and cities expressed anticipation for the forthcoming EU Strategy for Sustainable Tourism, expected in spring 2026. The debate highlighted the need for inclusive, place-based approaches that balance economic growth with environmental sustainability and community well-being.
