In a groundbreaking move to harmonize tourism and environmental sustainability, Madeira is set to implement a novel hiking trail management system starting January 1, 2026. This initiative, conceived by the Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation and the Regional Secretariat for Tourism, Environment and Culture, introduces mandatory registration, timed-entry slots, and differentiated pricing across its classified trails.

These measures, underpinned by research from the University of Madeira, aim to protect sensitive ecosystems while optimizing visitor flow. Notably, iconic routes like PR1 – Vereda do Areeiro will feature unique pricing post-reopening in April 2026. By reshaping access and pricing strategies, Madeira is setting a benchmark for sustainable tourism management in Europe, fostering ecosystem preservation, visitor safety, and enriched hiking experiences.
