Malta has been identified as one of the European countries most vulnerable to overtourism. The article states that the island receives far more visitors than its population can comfortably accommodate, with several tourists for every resident. This level of demand puts strain on local services, cultural heritage and the everyday lives of communities.
Tourism remains a vital part of Malta’s economy, but the challenges of managing such high visitor numbers are becoming increasingly visible. According to this article, without careful long-term planning, the benefits could be outweighed by problems such as overcrowding, higher living costs, and a decline in the overall visitor experience.
We recommend reading the original piece in full to understand the scale of the problem and the importance of developing sustainable tourism strategies that can balance growth with quality of life for both residents and travellers.
