Seventeen Cohesion Policy cooperation programmes are actively transforming the tourism landscape in the Mediterranean Basin, emphasizing sustainability, resilience, and inclusivity. Backed by more than €2 billion, this initiative confronts challenges like climate change, overtourism, and environmental degradation, reshaping Europe's most visited sea basin. Key projects, such as NA-Tour4CChange, pilot cooperative governance models and regional climate strategies in coastal areas, while Community4Tourism connects diverse stakeholders from Algeria to Türkiye, enhancing policy coordination for sustainable tourism. Additionally, the Mediterranean Multi-Programme Mechanism fosters collaboration across eight Interreg programmes, promoting efforts like TOURISMO, which utilizes digital tools to manage overtourism, and Adriatic PorTLand to enhance cross-border coastal tourism. These projects not only serve as economic catalysts but also act as diplomatic tools, boosting youth empowerment and regional integration. At the “Paths That Last – Collaborating for Sustainable Tourism in the Mediterranean” conference in Split, Croatia, stakeholders explored shared governance and innovative solutions, focusing on participatory governance and youth leadership for lasting impact.
