The Interreg Baltic Sea Region project Tour Rural Baltic held its kick-off on 29 and 30 September 2026 in Pori, Finland. It aims to make rural destinations more accessible and attractive through active and low-carbon mobility, over two years from July 2026 to June 2028.

The partnership brings together a Swedish cycling organisation, the Latvian Country Tourism Organization, Klaipėda Region in Lithuania, Satakunta University of Applied Sciences and the lead partner, Turku University of Applied Sciences. The first day introduced the team to a working farm that keeps traditional skills and hospitality alive, and to the Lauhanvuori-Hämeenkangas UNESCO Global Geopark, whose hiking and cycling routes cover very different levels of ability. A specialist from the Interreg project RegenT joined to discuss how mobility can support regenerative tourism.

The partners noted that the main difficulty is distance: attractive rural destinations are often in sparsely populated areas, so reaching and moving around them sustainably is hard. They also stressed that mobility is not only a technical matter, as how people move through a destination affects what they see, where they stop and which local businesses benefit, which links transport planning directly to the economic value that rural tourism keeps in the place.
