PortCREW has published its first Eco-Tourism Offer and Demand Analysis report, examining how cruise tourism could be redirected toward less-crowded inland, natural and cultural sites across five Mediterranean port cities.

The project is being tested in Valencia (Spain), Toulon (France), Koper (Slovenia), Ravenna (Italy) and Thessaloniki (Greece), each facing its own version of the same pressure: cruise passengers concentrated in a small number of central hotspots during peak season. Rather than trying to reduce cruise tourism overall, PortCREW's approach is to give passengers practical reasons and information to explore beyond the port-city centre, spreading visitor pressure toward inland and lesser-known sites while giving local SMEs and eco-tourism operators more visibility.

The project's central tool, the PortCREW platform, is designed to exchange eco-tourism information between stakeholders, provide dynamic information at cruise terminals, and help build sustainable eco-tourism packages for passengers travelling independently rather than on organised excursions. The newly published report combines stakeholder input, sustainability standards and geolocation-based analysis of visitor movement patterns across the five pilot destinations, forming the evidence base the project will build its recommendations on going forward.
