In a significant achievement for eco-friendly travel, Portugal has been recognized as the sixth greenest road trip destination worldwide by an international sustainability report. Released by Big 7 Travel in collaboration with the sustainable car rental company Green Motion, the report underscores Portugal's growing allure as a hub for electric vehicle (EV) tourism, evaluated through factors such as EV rental growth, charging infrastructure, and government sustainability efforts.

Portugal's ascent in the rankings is fueled by a remarkable 250% year-on-year growth in electric and hybrid vehicle rentals, the highest among all countries surveyed. Complementing this surge is the country's robust charging infrastructure, featuring an average of 14.9 charging points per 100 kilometers, coupled with affordable charging costs.

The report highlights Portugal's diverse and scenic routes, transforming traditional road trips into sustainable adventures. Noteworthy is the enchanting drive between Porto and Pinhão in the Douro Valley, offering vineyard-laden hillsides and mesmerizing river views. Similarly, routes connecting coastal natural parks from Bilbao to Porto deliver breathtaking landscapes and cultural richness.

Beyond the roads, Portugal's commitment to sustainable tourism extends to various initiatives focused on eco-lodging and minimal impact travel that blend seamlessly with the natural landscape. These efforts emphasize sustainability and promote an immersive experience in nature, supporting local ecosystems and cultures.

As Portugal leads the charge in green travel, it aligns with Nordic pioneers like Norway, Finland, and Denmark, who continue to excel with expansive EV infrastructure and clean energy utilization. Norway tops the global list, with key road trips like Geiranger to Trollstigen. Meanwhile, Iceland, Sweden, and Denmark also spotlight sustainable travel through robust electrification efforts and renewable energy sources.

Portugal's success in the sustainability space is testament to the country's proactive policies and growing traveler interest in greener alternatives. This recognition offers a compelling glimpse into how Portugal is redefining road trips for the environmentally conscious.
