Delegations from Cantabria and the Basque Country met in Ciboure, France, on 16 and 17 September for the second SMART Coast project meeting, focused on how coastal destinations can govern visitor pressure without sacrificing residents' quality of life.

The Cantabrian delegation included representatives from the regional government's environment department, the municipality of Piélagos (including its mayor), and OPE Cantabria, the region's European projects office. The first day's plenary centred on a roundtable comparing local and European approaches to overtourism governance, weighing how to balance visitor attraction, protection of natural resources, and quality of life for residents.

The programme also included field visits along the French Basque coast, where partners assessed practical visitor management and mobility measures at the Erretegia and Erromardie beach pilot sites, used as reference points for sustainable redevelopment. SMART Coast is co-funded by the EU through the Interreg Atlantic Area programme.
