The global transition towards climate-neutral tourism is gaining momentum, and the One Planet Sustainable Tourism Programme continues to play a central role in supporting this shift. As part of the Glasgow Declaration on Climate Action in Tourism, a series of events and knowledge-sharing opportunities is being organised to help stakeholders accelerate the sector's decarbonisation and strengthen climate resilience.

The initiative focuses on supporting tourism organisations in developing concrete climate action plans, improving emission measurement and implementing strategies aligned with science-based targets. The Glasgow Declaration promotes five key pathways: measuring emissions, reducing carbon footprints, regenerating ecosystems, strengthening collaboration and unlocking financing for climate solutions. These actions are essential to meet global commitments to significantly reduce tourism emissions by 2030 and to move towards net zero before 2050.

For European tourism, the relevance of this work is particularly strong. Many destinations across Europe are already prioritising sustainability, but the next step is to move from strategy to implementation. Climate risks, such as extreme weather, biodiversity loss, and changing travel patterns, directly affect tourism competitiveness, especially in coastal, mountain, and nature-based regions. Supporting low-carbon mobility, energy-efficient accommodation and regenerative tourism experiences is becoming crucial for long-term resilience.

The upcoming session on 28 February will provide practical guidance, tools, and real-life examples to help destinations and tourism businesses align their development with climate goals. Participants will gain insights into policy frameworks, innovation opportunities and collaboration models that support both environmental and economic sustainability. This is especially important for small and medium-sized enterprises, which form the backbone of the European tourism ecosystem and often need accessible guidance and partnerships to implement change.

Engaging in initiatives such as the Glasgow Declaration also strengthens Europe’s leadership in sustainable tourism. By connecting destinations, governments, and private-sector actors, the programme supports a coordinated transition that enhances destination quality, improves visitor experiences, and ensures tourism contributes positively to climate and biodiversity goals.

Tourism professionals, destination managers, and policymakers are encouraged to explore the full programme of events and register for the upcoming session on 28 February to gain practical knowledge and join the global movement towards climate-resilient tourism.
