In an innovative twist, Southern Europe is embracing off-season tourism as a pivotal avenue for sustainable growth. Data from a recent analysis shared at the 2026 Seasonality Summit reveals that countries like Spain, Italy, Greece, Croatia, and Portugal are reimagining shoulder periods not as downtimes but as opportunities. Spain leads this transformative trend, successfully redistributing tourist arrivals beyond the traditional summer peaks, with Portugal trailing closely behind.
Beyond sun-drenched days, events and improved connectivity are fueling year-round demand. During slower travel months, 53% to 72% of activities draw crowds, while 96.64 million flight seats are forecasted for the last quarter of 2026 across these nations – a notable 4.6% increase from 2025.
This strategic shift offers substantial gains for the hospitality sector, with winter months unveiling new profitability avenues. As prices drop up to 30% for elite accommodations and milder weather enhances the appeal, tourists are lured back for experiences ranging from arts to outdoor adventures.
