Updating the tourism strategy for the City of Bremen, with a particular focus on sustainability, has been established as a goal in the coalition agreement for the 2023–2027 legislative period of the State Parliament of Bremen. The current tourism strategy will expire in 2025 and is scheduled for revision thereafter.
Over the past six years, a significant share of the measures outlined in the Bremen 2025 tourism strategy have already been implemented. To ensure that Bremen Tourism remains competitive, innovative, and well-positioned for the future, cross-cutting issues such as sustainability (economic, environmental, and social) and digitalisation will be given greater emphasis in the updated strategy.
The revised strategy will focus on specific fields of action, refining and updating existing topics. Sustainability will be integrated through cross-cutting themes such as regionality, authenticity, cycling mobility, and climate protection.
Due to the previous strategy being developed in a highly participatory manner, with various rounds of consultation involving destination stakeholders, the identified measures were highly feasible, realistic, and tailored to the destination context. Together with cultural institutions, associations, hotels and restaurants, retailers, city district initiatives, and many service providers from the tourism sector, the steps for achieving the planned goals were discussed across departments, and project ideas were collected. As part of the measures implemented from the previous strategy, Bremen Tourism now organises regular stakeholder exchange events (on MICE, arts and culture, cultural heritage, sustainability, and general tourism development), which will serve as a consultation platform for the follow-up strategy. Bremen Tourism works in close cooperation with the tourism department at the Bremen Ministry of Economic Affairs, Ports and Transformation.
Within the existing strategy, five key thematic topics were defined, which will now be updated with measures, objectives, indicators, and key partners. In addition to the profile topics defined in the Bremen 2025 tourism strategy, the cross-cutting topics of sustainability, quality management, and digitalisation (particularly AI) have now been operationalised for Bremen Tourism and are continuously addressed within the framework of working groups, projects, and measures.
The participatory process for updating the tourism strategy is currently underway and is expected to be completed by the end of 2025.
