In order to improve the visibility of sustainable tourism offers and particularly highlight their benefits, Bremen Tourism carries out a variety of measures. The destination website bremen.de features two dedicated website for planning a sustainable trip to Bremen and for finding sustainable activities in the city (see Plan your sustainable visit to Bremen and Sustainable activities in Bremen). The content on these websites is regularily updated.
Given the fact that the choice of accommodation has a major leverage when it comes to overall sustainability level of a tourism package and its climate effects a third website has been created that displays sustainable accommodation offers in Bremen (Sustainable hotels in Bremen). Businesses that appear on the website hold a sustainability certification that has been obtained through a third-party audit. Moreover, the website displays a short text about the sustainability measures taken in the specific accommodation business. From 2023 - 2025 we saw an increase from 9 certified hotels to 31 certified hotels and we aim to reach 35 certified hotels in Bremen by the end of 2026.
To further improve visibility for certified accommodations, Bremen Tourism integrated a selection criterion for certified accommodation businesses in their own online portal and booking platform tourism.bremen.eu. That way validated sustainable offers can be easily selected and be highlighted for customers.
Besides the website, the topic of sustainability is implicitly displayed on the Social Media channels of Bremen Tourism. Channels such as visit.bremen provide information on cycling routes, local manufactories and products, sustainable shopping, UNESCO world heritage as well as green spaces and parks. Visit.bremen even highlights a section especially for sustainability content. Regularly content about sustainable and accessible activities is posted on Bremen Tourism´s Social Media Channels. To continue increasing awareness about this content we aim to upload one sustainability related post per week.
In terms of printed publications, Bremen Tourism has taken decisive steps to reduce the overall amount of print publications and respective number of copies. However, to cater for a variety of target groups some print publications are still distributed. They are printed on recycling paper and the carbon emissions from the printing process are offset.
To incentivize travellers to act sustainably when planning their visit to Bremen a cooperation between Bremen Tourism and the national railways company Deutsche Bahn was continued in 2025 with a special feature that rewards travellers arriving to the city by train. Similar campaigns that incentivise travellers to make more sustainable choices are planned for 2026.
Lastly, to also highlight sustainability information for the MICE sector the Bremen Convention Bureau has set up a website for sustainable meetings in Bremen that provides customers with information about sustainable arrival and transportation in the destination, sustainable meeting locations, sustainable catering, sustainable incentives as well as climate protection.
