Actions to take:
ECF commits to support the development of collaborative governance of national cycling destinations by empowering National EuroVelo Coordination Centres (NECCs) as official representatives of EuroVelo at a national level. NECCs are consortium of national stakeholders in charge of coordinating EuroVelo at a national level, but can also be responsible for cycling tourism developments in general. Countries having an NECC demonstrate better results in terms of EuroVelo route developments and signage.
The growing network of NECCs counts 24 countries represented among 38 countries crossed by EuroVelo in 2024. ECF coordinates the network of NECCs by providing specific information in regular NECC broadcast (newsletter), organising NECCs Online Workshops, and inviting them to the EuroVelo General Meeting (EVGM) once a year for decisions and exchange of information.
ECF also commits to develop EuroVelo routes as tourist destinations with the collaborative governance tool of EuroVelo Route Partnerships. Entities with a specific interest on a certain route join forces to develop activities focusing on the EuroVelo route in a multiannual Partnership Agreement. A shared budget is invested on activities to promote, develop and coordinate the EuroVelo route, a regular reporting is provided to the involved partners. In 2024, 3 EuroVelo Route Partnerships are ongoing along EuroVelo 8 – Mediterranean Route, EuroVelo 15 – Rhine Cycle Route, and EuroVelo 19 – Meuse Cycle Route.
Concrete actions:
- Organisation of the EuroVelo General Meeting every year
- At least 5 EuroVelo Broadcasts sent to NECCs every year
- At least 2 NECC Online Workshop organized every year
- At least 3 EuroVelo Route Partnerships coordinated by ECF
Target for 2025-2030:
- More countries with a National EuroVelo Coordination Centres to cover all countries by 2030
- At least 3 NECCs Online Workshop organized a year to exchange best practices and empower National EuroVelo Coordination Centres
- One EuroVelo General Meeting organized a year with at least 75% of NECCs represented
- More EuroVelo Route Partnerships to develop routes as tourist destinations
