A collaborative effort among ProRail, Infrabel, and UIC, LIFE NATURERAIL seeks to implement zero-chemical vegetation management strategies for railway inspection paths. The project emphasizes innovative techniques such as cryogenic treatment and electro-weeding, aiming to set new standards for sustainable practices in the railway sector across Europe.

LIFE NATURERAIL is an ambitious project launched by ProRail, Infrabel, and the International Union of Railways (UIC) aimed at revolutionizing vegetation management along railway inspection paths through environmentally friendly techniques. Set to run from October 2023 to June 2028, this initiative focuses on eliminating chemical herbicides in favor of innovative methods such as cryogenic treatment, electro-weeding, and the use of slow-growing grasses paired with mowing robots. These alternatives are designed to enhance safety while preserving biodiversity in sensitive railway environments. The project's overarching goal is to develop and standardize effective practices that can be replicated across Europe, thus promoting sustainable railway operations. A comprehensive cost-benefit analysis will be conducted to evaluate the socio-economic impacts of these methods, ensuring their viability for wider adoption.
